Top tips for packing small and irregular items for your move

Here at Removals Unlimited, we have seen our fair share of unusual and irregular items that people move home with. Sometimes these will be large, specialist items, like a grand piano, that we are able to move with the utmost care and attention.

In other instances, it might be small and delicate items that need to be safely packed before being transported to a new home.

If you use our full packing service, our trained and experienced packers will pack up your belongings safely and quickly in the days leading up to your house or flat move. We also offer a partial house packing service, where we pack delicate and fragile items, such as ornaments or your crockery, in preparation for moving day.

However, if you decide to pack all your belongings yourself, you are likely to find some of the tips from Lifehacker about how to pack small and irregular items safely useful. As the website notes, some of these items won’t necessarily be precious or especially valuable, but are simply items you are likely to be transporting.

A classic example in the kitchen is spice jars. The top tip from the news provider is to put all of these in pots with lids. If you carefully line them up, they should fit snugly in your pots and this will also prevent them from moving around and rattling too much.

Another top tip for when you’re dismantling furniture (if you don’t make use of our expertise in this area of course!) is to put all the nuts, bolts, screws and other pieces of hardware that you’ll need to reassemble it in a zip-lock plastic bag and tape this to the piece of furniture they belong to. Those small yet very important fixings can be easy to lose at the best of times, let alone when you’re moving home!

You can also reuse common household items, such as plastic carrier bags, as additional padding for breakable items like glasses when you’re packing. If you want to make sure you have all the best packing materials for the job, however, visit our Box Shop to order everything you need from boxes and bubble wrap to packing tape and labels.

Not sure exactly what you’ll need? Take a look at our moving box kits to ensure that you, at the very least, have all the basics covered.

An article in Forbes offered some great advice on how to pack clothes, suggesting that before you even think about packing you go through your drawers and wardrobe to decide exactly what you want to keep, and donate any items you no longer wear or want.

The news provider also recommended using cardboard boxes for clothes that can be transported folded, as well as using wardrobe boxes for your hanging garments, as this allows you to move them on their hangers and makes unpacking them at the other end much quicker and easier (not to mention saving you from ironing everything).

A top tip for those bulky items of clothing like big jackets and thick jumpers is to use a vacuum packer to compress them.

Our team knows all the tricks for packing clothing, as well as small or unusual items, so if the thought of packing your home up yourself is making you feel stressed or overwhelmed, talk to us about our full packing services and find out how the team at Removals Unlimited can make your life easier.
