Top tips for a smooth move

Here at Removals Unlimited, we know better than most what it takes for a home move to go smoothly – after all, it is our business to make sure every one of our clients moves goes as smoothly as possible!

Of course, we have extensive resources at our disposal, not to mention an incredible team of experienced professional movers. We’re talking about everything from reliable and clean removal trucks to protective gear for furniture and homes, not to mention all manner of packing materials for items big and small.

But if you’re getting ready to move home in Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch or elsewhere in the South West, what can you do to help the process go as smoothly as possible?

According to professional home organiser Vicky Silverthorn, it’s often the small tasks that make the difference.

Speaking to The Express, she shared some of her top tips for helping the moving process go smoothly.

At the top of the list is to declutter, but she recommends doing it in small chunks. Rather than thinking about decluttering your entire home, instead pick a single room to tackle first, and then break that down further. So, if you start in your kitchen, then you narrow it down to a single kitchen cupboard and you go from there.

The further in advance of your move you can start this process, the better, because it will not only mean you have fewer belongings to pack, but also that your removals team has fewer boxes to transport.

Another of her top tips is to use small boxes for the packing you do yourself. This allows you to pack in small doses, not to mention that it removes the risk of overpacking large boxes with heavy items like books, which are then challenging for your moving team to get in and out of their removal vehicles.

When you are packing, make sure you label every box not only with the room in which it should go, but also with what’s in it. In addition, write labels on the top and the side of the box so that it’s still visible if boxes become stacked on top of one another.

Ms Silverthorn also suggested packing a small box with the essentials you might want or need when you first move into your new home. Include the likes of your kettle, mugs, teabags and coffee, teaspoons and a few home comforts like a blanket that can help you feel settled sooner.

Depending on what you plan to do when you first move in, you might want to include cleaning supplies in that box. Research from Zoopla revealed that the first thing 37% of people do when they move into a new home is give it a deep clean!

While we don’t offer cleaning services, we do offer furniture disassembly and reassembly services to help make sure that you don’t spend your first days putting beds, sofas and other furniture back together (not to mention hunting for the screws and bolts you’ve misplaced along the way!).
