What type of home is most popular with home movers?
If you’re on the hunt for a new home in Winton, Charminster, Christchurch, Westbourne, Southbourne or elsewhere in the South West, what kind of property are you looking for? Here at Removals Unlimited, we help people moving into and out of all kinds of property – no job is too big or too small!
But back to the question in hand. Do you want a flat? A terraced house? A semi-detached house, or a detached house? If you said you were on the lookout for a detached house, you wouldn’t be alone. In fact, the Independent revealed that detached homes account for almost one-third of home sales in the UK in the year to March 2023.
This is a significant increase from detached houses accounting for 25 per cent of home sales in the country ten years ago.
One of the reasons for a growing number of home movers seeking out detached properties, according to Halifax which pulled the data together, is the shift to home working in recent years, with the financial services firm suggesting that people are seeking more space in their homes that allow them to have a good work-life balance in this era of home working.
This change in our working habits has also allowed people to broaden their search radius for a new home, as commuting to an office every day or even every week may no longer be essential.
In the South West, the figures show that detached homes are the most popular among home movers, accounting for 31 per cent of purchases, followed by semi-detached properties and then terraced houses.
For many who are taking their second step on the property ladder, it could be that they are now in a position to move out of the flats where they started their time as homeowners and buy a larger home that they intend to stay in for longer.
And due to the substantial property price growth seen in the UK, and especially in our part of the country, in recent years, houses could be an option where they weren’t before. The latest Halifax house price index showed that values remained broadly stable in March, increasing by just 0.1 per cent from the same time last year.
However, while largely unchanged in the past 12 months, homes in the UK have risen in value by an average of £28,000 over the past two years. This might enable you to buy a bigger property, such as upsizing from a flat to a house, especially if you’re moving to an area that is (currently) less sought after than the one you are selling in.
If you’re moving out of a flat it can feel like a daunting task, especially if your building doesn’t have a lift and you’re not on the ground floor – a common challenge in Bournemouth and Poole where we have so many beautiful Victorian properties that have been converted into flats.
Our team at Removals Unlimited are well-versed in handling stairs, tight corners and awkward entrances and exits from buildings. We will not only make sure that all of your possessions are protected as we take them from your flat to our removal vehicles, but also the building itself, whether that’s the walls, floors or ceilings.
