How to use storage to support your move

Moving home isn’t always as easy as moving straight from your current property to your new one. You may need to rent somewhere in between, or simply stay with friends or family for a few days.

You may also need to carry out renovations or redecorate at your new home. In that case, you’ll want to keep the number of boxes and amount of furniture to a minimum to not only make it easier, but prevent any of your belongings from getting damaged.

Another element to consider is what your current property looks like to prospective buyers if it’s on the market but hasn’t sold yet. An article for This Is Money recommends getting rid of as much clutter from your home as possible when you have people viewing it. But the challenge then becomes where you put it instead.

In all of these instances, short and long term storage can be useful. This can allow you to move and pack in stages. If you have items that you don’t need, and that make your property look cluttered, move them into storage before you start having viewings.

Similarly, if you know that you’re going to be renovating the property you’re moving to, putting your furniture and non-essential belongings in storage can be a great way to keep your stress to a minimum and protect your possessions.

If you’ll have to rent between property purchases, storage can again come in handy. For one thing, it will save you moving all of your belongings into rented accommodation, only to move them all again a few months later.

It also means you can consider furnished properties, as you won’t have to find space for your own furniture and other items.

Or you might be moving in with a partner for the first time and not know how your furniture and other belongings will work together. Putting items in long term storage can give you time to figure that out.

When you’re looking for short or long term storage, there are a few things you need to consider. Firstly, you need to know that wherever you’re keeping your possessions is secure. At Removals Unlimited, our storage facilities are fully secured.

Secondly, you need to know that the storage facility you choose is weatherproof and clean – you don’t want your belongings to become damaged while they’re in storage. All of our storage units are completely weatherproof and we make sure we keep them clean.

Thirdly, check what insurance the storage provider has. We have £5 million liability insurance, as well as in-transit insurance of £50,000 to cover your possessions when they’re being moved between your home and storage unit.

Finally, you need to find out how you can access your possessions when you want them. Our storage facilities are in Winton. This means they’re easy to access wherever you live in Bournemouth, Christchurch or Poole.

If you have more questions about our long and short term storage, give us a call – we’ll be happy to answer your questions. The Self Storage Association UK also has a comprehensive list of things to look for when you’re choosing short and long term storage that you may find helpful.
