Are you considering downsizing? Check out our top tips to make the process smoother

If you are at a stage in your life where your children have moved out of the family home, and you’re still living there, have you considered downsizing? While the thought of leaving a happy family home is, understandably, a difficult one, there are a number of advantages to downsizing.

Research conducted by Savills recently revealed that older homeowners could unlock an average of £129,000 by selling the properties they currently live in which are too large for them and moving to smaller homes.

Lucian Cook, head of residential research at the organisation, also pointed out that while many people have been reluctant to downsize in the past, the rising cost of running a larger home is making the thought of downsizing more appealing.

He predicted that these increased costs are likely to make more people consider downsizing in order to reduce their monthly outgoings.

But, of course, even if it makes sense to downsize on a practical level, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to do on an emotional one. It can be difficult to box up all of your belongings and to declutter a large home in preparation for moving to a smaller one. While we can’t help with the emotion of the situation, our friendly team of professional movers and packers can certainly help with the packing.

Once you have decluttered your home, or put the belongings you’re unsure about keeping in storage – something we can also help with at Removals Unlimited – let our team take care of the rest. Our full packing service means that our experienced packers will box up all of your possessions in the days before your move, ensuring they are ready to be transported to your new home.

If the thought of decluttering feels too much along with leaving your family home, you can always put some of your belongings in storage. We provide secure, safe and weatherproof storage in Winton, which is easy to access when you’re ready. There are long-term storage and short-term storage options available to suit every need, giving you time to go through your belongings at a time that suits you.

You may also find it useful to take some of those DIY jobs off your list if you’re moving. While it can be tempting to think that you need to spruce up your home ahead of putting it on the market, in reality you can leave most jobs for the new owners.

An article for Saga Magazine recently pointed out that there is little point in spending the time and money on renovating a property you’re not planning to stay in, especially given that most people will have their own ideas about what they want, which may not match your own.

Instead, it’s best to focus on making the entrance to your property look as appealing as possible, which also means tidying up the front garden if it’s become a little overgrown. So, take some of those DIY jobs off your list and focus on finding the next home of your dreams.
