What to pack in your box of moving day essentials
When you’re moving home, there is a lot to organise. You can lighten the load by using our full packing service to get the bulk of your belongings packed safely and ready to go. But there’s one thing that we advise all our clients to pack themselves: a bag of moving day essentials.
Why? Because only you know everything that’s essential in your life. So, more importantly, what should you include in your bag of essentials when you’re getting ready for your house move in Bournemouth?
According to The Spruce, you should separate this into two sets of belongings: personal items and family essentials.
For family essentials, you’ll probably want a whole box. Make sure you tell our trained professional packers which is your essentials box.
Among the recommended items for a family essentials box are:
● Kettle and mugs
● Tea/coffee (and milk and sugar)
● Cutlery and crockery for every member of the family
● Scissors (so you can open the rest of your boxes with ease)
● Toilet paper
● Snacks
● Bin bags
● A portable tool kit
● A small first aid kit
● A torch and/or candles and matches
● Washing up liquid
● A tea towel and dish cloth
● An unopened bottle of all-purpose cleaner and a cloth
● Important documents (you’ll find more about these in our next blog post!)
There might be a few other items that you’d like to include in this list, such a toaster or a throw to snuggle under on the sofa on your first evening in your new home. The important thing is to think carefully about what you’ll need in the first days after your move while you’re unpacking the rest of your boxes.
Each person in your family should also have their own personal bag of essential belongings. This is where you pack items like:
● Toothbrush (and toothpaste)
● Shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and other essential toiletries
● A towel
● Hairbrush
● Your electronic devices and their chargers. That’s your phone, laptop, tablet.
● Medication (if you take any)
● Clothes and pajamas
Once you’ve packed your essentials box and bag, make sure they’re clearly labelled. We would recommend taking these items with you in your car, rather than loading them into the removal vehicles.
Because these are essential items, they’re going to be things you’ll need until the day of your move. Make sure you allow yourself some time to pack these final possessions the evening before or on the morning of your move. If it helps, make a list of what should be in your essentials bag and box, and check the items off as you put them in.
Leeds Building Society has even come up with a handy printable checklist if you’re struggling to work out what you need to pack on moving day. Just remember, your essentials box and bag should be what you will need or want as soon as you move in. Think about your daily rituals and what makes you smile first thing in the morning. Those are the belongings you’ll want to have easy access to as you start life in your new home.
