Well done to my eldest daughter, Mia!

Whilst I was spending some time with my eldest in our local playground in Bournemouth, Mia couldn’t help but notice the amount of rubbish floating around.

So, I asked Mia if she would fancy cleaning the park next time around and she immediately responded positively through her kind heart for nature.

On that day I ordered 2 grabbers and here we were planning on our next ‘little project’!

Mia was chasing me for an update on a daily basis until we received our grabbers (ordered online).

The day they arrived Mia was so happy, so we went to try them…since then we go as often as Mia requests (4 times so far). And we have been to 2 different local playground since then.

On our very first outing, Councillor Patrick Oakley approached us to congratulate our initiative and asked if he could photograph us…he did present his credentials before doing so and kindly sent us the picture afterwards.

We then go approached by the Bournemouth Parks Foundation and the Dorset Devils.

They mentioned us through facebook and their twitter account here.

Here is a bit about the Dorset Devils:

Dorset Devils are 410+ residents of the borough of Bournemouth and beyond who love where they live but dislike the sight of litter and its effects on our community and environment, especially it’s wildlife and marine life.

We are each prepared to tidy up our patch whenever we feel like it and when we have the time-ten minutes or two hours- each volunteer decides. We aim to be visible in the community in the hope our presence will encourage others to manage their own litter.

TeamDD link up with other groups i.e. Surfers Against Sewage, Marine Conservation Society, Bournemouth Borough Council, Bournemouth University, Bournemouth in Bloom, Wimborne War on Waste, HeathCare Team as well as take part in the Great British Spring Clean and Great Dorset Beach Cleans.

We have our own market stall which we use to engage with the public to help raise more awareness of our beautiful local environment. Also, we visit primary schools and do activities with scout packs and other community groups.

DD- helping to raise awareness and make Bournemouth less-littered.

Here is a bit about the Bournemouth Parks Foundation:

The Bournemouth Parks Foundation is a small but perfectly formed charity devoted to enhancing Bournemouth's parks gardens and green spaces for everyone to enjoy, independent from Bournemouth Borough Council. We go above and beyond our parks normal maintenance transforming them into captivating spaces in which to relax, learn, exercise and play.

They are an independent charitable organisation founded in January 2015. Although Bournemouth Borough Council has overall responsibility to maintain and develop Bournemouth's parks we work alongside them with the aim to raise much needed funds for improvement and enhancements above what the council provide.

They get their teeth into the following key themes:

  • Childrens playConservation and wildlife

  • Art and culture

  • Horticulture

  • Health and wellbeing

  • Sport

  • Educational grants for apprentices and

  • Support for local community groups

These are all vitally important to enhance our parks and further attract residents and visitors to enjoy them.
