Top tips for packing your clothes ahead of your move
When it comes to packing before your removals company in Bournemouth, Ringwood, Christchurch or Poole comes to start loading boxes into their removals vehicles, you have probably worried about packing fragile items and not given much thought to the best way to pack your clothes.
After all, these are easy to fold and pop in boxes, bags and suitcases. However, if you do this then you are likely to have many crumpled clothes at the other end of your move. There is more of an art to packing clothes ahead of a move than you might think, as an article for Forbes explained.
Naturally, one of the best things to do is reduce the amount of clothing you are transporting to your new abode. Spend some time going through your wardrobe, chest of drawers and dresser to make sure that you really do want all the clothes you’re taking with you.
Many people did this during the various lockdowns last year, with research from WRAP revealing that two in five people in the UK had a clear out of their clothing in 2020.
There are a number of packing options for your clothing:
Cardboard boxes
Wardrobe boxes
Suitcases
Vacuum bags
For any clothes that you’re going to be folding flat, like jumpers and jeans, cardboard boxes are a good option. Try to mix what you pack in the box so that you have heavier items of clothing at the bottom and lighter ones on top. Don’t be tempted to over-fill your boxes either.
Wardrobe boxes are ideal for hanging clothes that you want to keep relatively free of creases. As their name suggests, they have been designed to transport hanging clothes and come with a bar fitted in them. Again, make sure you don’t overfill these kinds of boxes either. Here at Removals Unlimited, we have a range of boxes, including wardrobe boxes, available through our Box Shop.
Most of us also have suitcases, which are naturally a good option for transporting clothes. Forbes recommends using the “military roll” method for packing clothes in suitcases, which is best suited to garments such as T-shirts, shirts and dresses.
Vacuum bags are another great option for bulky items of clothing like jackets, winter coats and bulky jumpers. If you’re moving in the summer, they are also a great way to keep winter clothes clean and ensure they are easy to store until you get round to unpacking them.
When you’re thinking about packing your clothes, also take the time to consider how best to pack your shoes. If you just throw all of your shoes into a soft bag, they can easily get squashed and lose their shape.
It’s best to use a hard-shell suitcase or cardboard boxes, again being careful not to overfill them. One top tip is to stuff your shoes with socks to not only make the most of the space, but also to help them keep their shape.
