Declutter your belongings… Donate and discard!

Decluttering is an activity that more of us have been getting on board within recent months, with one survey showing that almost half of Brits did some decluttering during the first of the Covid-19 lockdowns in the UK this year.

Ring, a home security company, commissioned research which found that 47% of us have had an extensive clearout at our properties in the last six months (their survey was conducted in August 2020).

With another UK lockdown here, now could be the perfect time to do some decluttering of your own. It will be especially useful if you’re planning to move home in the coming weeks or months. In fact, when you use Removals Unlimited in Winton, Westbourne, Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch or Ferndown you can also make use of our secure short and long-term storage facility.

Our storage facility is well-placed to make it easy for you to go through your belongings and donate any possessions that you no longer need or want, as it’s just a short walk from both the British Heart Foundation and Salvation Army charity shops on Winton high street.

This might be especially useful if we’re assisting you with a house clearance, as it will allow you to securely store the items that you need to sort without holding up the sale of the property you’re clearing.

Donating any belongings that you no longer have a use for will not only be beneficial for the person who’s able to buy the items you donate, but it will also help you to support worthy causes. It’s also a much more sustainable way to approach living, as it’s an opportunity to give possessions a new lease of life rather than consigning them to landfill.

If you’re thinking of getting stuck into some decluttering during this next lockdown period, take a look at some of the top tips from Good Housekeeping to help you declutter and streamline your possessions.

Start with products that expire

This is particularly relevant in rooms like the bathroom and kitchen. You only need to spend about 20 minutes every few months to go through all your beauty products and the spices and packages tucked away in your kitchen cupboards to make sure that anything that’s out of date gets binned and doesn’t continue to take up space.

Make space on your shelves

With more of us working from home than ever, you might have noticed that your home office space is a bit messy. Use the ‘rule of three’ for items displayed on your shelves. That means you should have no more than three non-book items per shelf. When it comes to your books, you should aim to leave 10% of every shelf free to allow you to grow your collection.

When you’re moving home, books are often some of the items that take up a lot of box space. If you can slim down your collection before you start packing, you’ll have an easier job of moving home and unpacking at the other end!

Keep an eye on your coffee table

Coffee tables can often get filled up with paperwork and knick-knacks so follow the rule of having at least 75% of your table clear of clutter.

When you’re moving home, it’s particularly useful to declutter. We carry out a free, no-obligation house survey to assess how many boxes you’ll require for your move and therefore how much we will quote for our moving service. Reducing the amount of items you have to pack also reduces the amount of boxes we carry and load, making life easier for all of us!
